The hidden business skill almost everyone overlooks
Have you ever really thought about the words that you use to tell the story of your business (or your brand, or even yourself).
When I look back, I was so lucky to have an English teacher who transformed the way I looked at words and stories. I didn’t realise it at the time and actually didn’t really realise it until very recently but it is her teachings that helped me be successful with the businesses I have lucky enough to work in, to manage and to lead.
Most people think creative writing belongs in classrooms, but I completely disagree. It has a multitude of applications in the commercial world. I see my work as bringing clarity of thought to business. When I write creatively, I’m forced to organise ideas, understand who I am talking to and to communicate with an outcome in mind. I think that is kind of powerful.
Think about the types of writing you do every day…

Every single piece of your daily written communication is a chance to either delight, challenge or worst of all leave people a bit ‘meh’. But very few people actually do this. And worryingly even less so in an AI driven world. It probably shouldn’t do, but I think that’s a bit sad. (and I know my English teacher would do too!)
Engaging a creative writer in your business or even just thinking about your copy just a little bit more, will give you a very real advantage over the bland.
Anyone who has worked with me in any capacity over the last 25 or so years will have heard me bang on about the importance of being able to tell a good story, to be make complex data or make systems simple or land that big client. People engage with people and I think creative writing still has a massive role to play in that.
What do you think? Is ‘Creative Writing’ a core skill in your business or just a nice to have?
